The House spins a tale of the matriarch Bernarda Neo and her grip over her five daughters – of the drama behind inherited wealth that unleashed a series of events that ends with the youngest daughter Adela’s suicide. Did
Adela die a virgin or is it just a decree that no one is to cry? In the end, it is the universal story of family repression and truths hidden for the sake of the family name.
Making it relevant to the local fabric of family and its web of domestic drama, FLAMENCO SIN FRONTERAS, or dance without borders, draws parallels to the Peranakan hierarchal structure of the domineering matriarch and the ‘secrets’ hidden in the name of family.
The dance drama is adapted from the original play The House of Bernarda Alba by Garcia Lorca but set in a Peranakan household in modern times. The audience will enjoy the discipline that is Flamenco, but in an Asian
setting with a multiracial cast and an infusion of Asian cultural influence.
Local award-winning playwright Joel tan gives just the right dose of local flavor with his deft adaptation of a century-old play against an original musical composition involving both local and foreign musicians blending
east and west cultures.
“We take a tradition out of its rigid confines and add a fresh interpretation that is at once familiar yet inspired,” says artistic director Antonio Vargas, with a result of a winning ground-breaking choreography of flamenco, modern dance and drama set against the pulsating flamenco rhythms and sounds.
